We were excited to have Hawaii News Now newscaster, Lacy Deniz, as our first multicultural guest reader to KWON. This Wednesday she came to read a bilingual book (English & Hawaiian), Ho`omalamalama, which shared the Hawaiian culture with Kumu Carla Kahiapo's fourth grade students. Students were thrilled to be read to by someone who they recognized on television. Mahalo Lacy Deniz! Our students and kumu thoroughly enjoyed your visit.
October 4th -10th was National Fire Prevention Week. Three awesome HFD firefighters came to talk to our students about fire safety and read books to our students in Kindergarten through 3rd grade. A huge mahalo to firefighters Jaimie Kinard, Kiana Kam & Erica Fernandez for taking time out of your schedule to be guest readers in our library!
Last week Friday KWON library had our first Adopt-A-Book Day! Selected books were placed outside of our library that needed a home. Students were able to 'adopt' or take a book home for free if they promised to read and care for it. Staff members found books for their classrooms and home, as well. Thank you to all who helped make this day's event a success. Happy Reading!!
School has been in session for two weeks now! Students are learning our library rules and the behaviors on 'how to care for a book'. Ask your child to share what items are in 'Kumu Jen Silva's No-no Never-never box' and they will tell you what you should NEVER have or use while handling a library book. As a follow up we read the book, Manners with a Library Book. Now we can begin to borrow books!!
